The temps here in NYC are freezing!! Yet, while a significant portion of the art word was focused on Miami in early December, one New York artist headed north to paint and present her work. The art community up in Newfoundland presented an art expo of their own and New Yorker Lisa Lebofsky was well represented. Far removed from the palm trees and Florida sunshine, the Newfoundland Art Expo at the Arts & Cultural Centre in St. John’s offered up local work including Lisa’s. Ms. Lebofsky travels the world to create her plein air paintings and has recently spent significant time on residency in the Canadian province.

When in NYC Lisa is an artist in residence and our neighbor here in the Clemente Building on the Lower East Side. Prior to driving up for the show, she brought us three works of art to make presentation ready for the exhibition. The Frames and Stretchers team created appropriate pristine white frames with mats and museum glass for three of her oil paintings on paper depicting frozen ice formations on water from her “Fogo Island” series.

Lisa holds a BFA in metalsmithing from SUNY New Paltz, and an MFA in painting from the New York Academy of Art. She has received numerous grants and awards from organizations as diverse as the Bronx Council on the Arts and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Lebofsky travels extensively to create plein air art that addresses our current environmental crisis. In each place: Antarctica, Labrador, Greenland, and the Maldives, she spends time with local residents and in Newfoundland, she seems to have found a second home. She muses, “Being in Newfoundland, I had entered into one of my own paintings.” *

Being in the Clemente we are surrounded by many outstanding artists and it’s always a pleasure to be included in projects for their exhibitions. If you have an upcoming show, why not stop by and visit our Suffolk Street location and see what we can do for you?
