Legendary American photographer David LaChappelle is perhaps best known for his uncanny and provocative artworks that will be sure to gauge a reaction from viewers. With a meticulous attention to composition, pop art colors and subversive scenes, his artworks have garnered the attention of many art collectors and have been exhibited internationally for decades, as well as being featured in fashion and editorial magazines such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, and New York Times Magazine.
David LaChappelle was noticed by Andy Warhol while he worked as a busboy at Studio 54 at the age of 15. According to this New York Times Review, Andy Warhol encouraged LaChappelle to pursue photography, reportedly saying "Do whatever you want. Just make sure everybody looks good."
Importantly, David LaChapelle has gone on to become a crusader for the gay rights movement, such as his infamous Diesel advertisement where he photographed two male sailors kissing in homage to the iconic Times Square WWII photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt. Using his art as a platform to show more representations of gay couples landed David LaChappelle this photography commission at a time when the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy was outlawing openly gay and bisexual oriented persons from service in the US Military.
