With Handcrafted Wood Frame & Wood Cleat

For this large scale artwork on paper measuring 76 ½” x 67”, we created a handcrafted wood picture frame with a heavy duty wood strainer with integrated cleat for the perfect hanging. This strainer design perfectly balances the weight of this piece and seals the frame all together, while the Optium Museum Plexiglass protects the artwork on paper from light exposure, fingerprints, and other damages. The paper itself is mounted on acid-free museum board in a type of mounting technique called island floating. Here, the softly ripped deckled edges of the paper are highlighted and more pronounced to appear floating over a hidden platform underneath. This creates a sculptural breathing space between the paper, the foundation, and the glazing. We were very honored to be able to give this artwork the best conservation from start to finish. From the first moment we receive artwork we create a condition report to assess the artwork’s materials in depth, remarking on previous mounting techniques and any imperfections in how the artwork has aged over time. The artist plays a large factor in determining the longevity of the piece, by how materials are applied and what paper is chosen for the artwork. These drawings with Richard Serra’s thick black oilstick were created on handmade paper, signed in a special edition by Richard Serra.

The American-born artist Richard Serra is perhaps best known for their large scale drawings with black paintstick (compressed oil paint, wax, and pigment) and their iconic interactive steel sculptures that allow audience members to walk through, beckoning participants to become more sensitive to their surroundings and scale. Throughout Serra’s career he consistently turned to drawing as part of his artistic process, engaging with object empathy beyond two and three dimensional surfaces.
