Custom Picture Frames for Ai Weiwei
Mask Series for Humanitarian Relief
One of the most rewarding parts about working in art conservation and custom framing in NYC, Miami, and New Haven, Connecticut is the opportunity to collaborate with artists and collectors, and creating beautiful one-of-a-kind designs for artworks of all varieties and mediums.
A recent project we loved at our custom canvas stretching and picture framing studio in Lower East Side, New York City, was getting the chance to build two custom shadowbox frames for the legendary Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei.
We use only the best archival materials for our custom picture frames and canvas stretching in NYC, Wynwood, Miami and New Haven, Connecticut. For these pieces by Ai Weiwei, our client chose Museum Glass to give these artworks the best 99% UV Protection and Anti-Reflection for preserving the collector items. Each custom wood frame we built in gallery white and sea foam green finish has been fitted and joined perfectly to complement these sculptural pieces by Ai Weiwei. With the best custom framing and canvas stretching studio n NYC, the possibilities for your design can be made to order exactly as you wish! Our team will be more than happy to provide recommendations to help you choose the right frame for your space, artwork and preferences.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Ai Weiwei and the artist's son created a series of woodblock designs with the medical masks, and later a silkscreen edition of masks that could be purchased with proceeds going to humanitarian efforts, including Human Rights Watch, Refugees International, and Médecins Sans Frontières.
In the first month of the project alone, Ai Weiwei's Mask series raised over $1.4 million for these emergency mutual aid organizations. Partnering with Alexandra Munroe, curator of the project and curator for the Guggenheim in New York, a total of 10,000 masks were created and silkscreened by Ai Weiwei for humanitarian relief in circumstances affected by the pandemic. We were honored to offer these artworks the best archival preservation framing in New York City where we specialize in framing art on paper, textiles, or sculptural items such as Ai Weiwei's mask series.
Details of Custom Shadowbox Maple Frame in Gallery White
for Ai Weiwei Mask Series
At our Frames and Stretchers canvas stretching and custom framing studio in New York City, we received two of these masks for custom shadowbox framing. Listening to our client's preferences and aesthetics, we first created a gallery white maple frame with black matting to make the vibrant colors and shape of the sculptural work stand out.
For the second shadowbox frame, a natural maple frame stained with sea foam green was chosen to accentuate the cooler tones in Ai Weiwei's mask series. For mounting sculptural works in a shadbowbox frame, we used the conservation techinque of Japanese paper hinging with rice paste. This process ensures damage-free mounting and hinging, while offering archival benefits and fully-reversible conservation framing, should the owner wish to remove the artwork for transport, sale, or reframing in the future.
