Tschabalala Self Illustrates a "Bodega Run"

Frames and Stretchers knows how to do stretchers! Take for example these eight, eight-foot interlocking stretchers we just had custom-built for the artist Tschabalala Self. After the group of mixed media works on canvas were stretched in our studio, they were transported to the artist’s New Haven, CT studio. From there they were shipped to her current exhibition, “Bodega Run” which is on view at the Pilar Corria Gallery in London through September 17.

Tschabalala Self is originally from Harlem. She completed her undergraduate degree at Bard before completing her MFA at Yale in 2015. Highly successful for a recent graduate, Tschabalala was represented at this year’s Frieze Art Fair by the Italian based T293 Gallery which specializes in presenting emerging international artists. She has been featured in numerous publications including Art in America, The Guardian, Hyperallergic, and the New York Times.

Self’s practice involves a primarily mixed media approach. Her works on paper are often collage or assemblages and the works that we stretched involved paper images sewn onto a fabric backing. These individual pieces are being shown in as part of an onsite installation in the gallery. Tschabalala addresses the image of the black female body as seen in our culture. The aptly named Self explains, “My subjects are fully aware of their conspicuousness and are unmoved by their viewers. Their role is not to show, explain, or perform but rather “to be.” In being, their presence is acknowledged and their significance felt. My project is committed to this exchange, for my own edification and for the edification of those who resemble me.” *
